Mrs. Miller’s Muffins

Young Toby stood on the couch, looking out the window and waving at Mrs. Miller who walked away down the small pathway that led to their home. He turned around to his dad. ‘Is Mrs. Miller sad, daddy?’

Kyle Hanson ruffled his son’s hair, the rich auburn inherited from his late mother. Cheryl had been the love of Kyle’s life and he still missed her every day. Lately he had noticed many things in Toby that reminded him of her. He didn’t know if Toby had picked up gestures and mannerisms of his mom or if somehow Cheryl wanted to let Kyle know she was still around in some way.

Kyle sighed. ‘Yeah, she is.’

‘Why is she sad, daddy?’

Kyle kissed the crown of his son’s head. ‘She also lost someone, Toby. Her husband died and soon it’s the anniversary of his death again.’

Toby nodded, his young face understanding and like he carried the weight of the world on his small shoulders.

Toby jumped off the couch and walked straight to the kitchen table. ‘At least she has Doctor Whiskers.’

Kyle smiled. Doctor Whiskers. Mrs. Miller once told him she had given her cat that name because the pet had been a godsend after the death of her husband. The cat had worked like an anti-depressant for her, she had said.

Kyle went to the table where Toby had already started to pick little pieces off one of the chocolate muffins Mrs. Miller had brought them. Her muffins were simply the very best, no doubt about it. Many single and married female neighbours had brought him muffins and baked goods after his wife had died, alas, most had been generic cake mixes, tasteless, lifeless, soulless.

Mrs. Miller’s muffins, though, they tasted like heaven, rich in chocolate with added butter and eggs and not just powder you added water to. They were made with passion and love.

Before he knew it, Kyle sat down and reached for a muffin, a signal for Toby to grab one from the plate with his small hand. They both looked at each other, big grins on their faces.
